I want to get a good Sony headunit, somewhere in the mid range of pricing, what would be a good option? or perhaps another brand?

why Pioneer? Better sound quality or just cost-wise you get the same basics...

With Pioneer you will get a bit better quality, you will get it cheaper, and you will probably end up with more options on your head unit. Note that I am not saying you will not find a cheaper Sony model than what Pioneer offers. What I am saying is that two comparable models, one Sony and one Pioneer, the Pioneer will generally be a bit cheaper. That said, Sony doesn't make terrible stuff and you can get a good product from them, you will just pay more for it.

Sometimes, the brands are really not that important as long as the unit has been proven to be durable and good by others who have tried. Sony has been in the market for many years, they already have a name and when you buy their products, you also pay for the number of years they have maintained to be one of the best brands. Pioneer is also okay, you can't say it is inferior as it also has been proven.
