I was wondering what kind of major I should get into if I'm interested in this kind of stuff? Is this more of an eletrical engineering type of thing?

Obviously electrical engineering wouldnt hurt.. but even something like an auto shop if your school has access to one would probably be a good idea. to just be able to go in there and mess around..

from experience I would recommend starting with an automotive class or program. an engineering degree would certainly explain some of this stuff more in depth but an automotive class will allow you to have enough exposure to it to decide whether or not you really want to do the 4 year degree. a little exposure can really go a long way.

It pays to learn how to fix a car. This is very important and it is also very useful. In this case, studying an automotive course or even just a vocational one, greatly helps you in maintaining and repairing your car. Electrical engineering will also help you learn but it is more focused on many other electronics and you have to decide if you really want to work on this type of job before you get a degree on it.
