I've heard a lot of alarms go off in parking lots and no one pays attention anymore - has anyone seen someone actually react to a car alarm and caught someone grabbing a car lately?

I never seen that in a parking lot but I see at the neighborhood. It is the responsibility of the parking attendant to take care of the car. Most of the car theft cases happend at free parking lot or illegal parking lot.

An alarm is useful because it shuts the electrical system, so the car cannot be started. But a crook will still take whatever is in your car..

I think that alarm systems have become just like someone yelling help, nobody cares. At least if you are yelling you can try yelling "FIRE", people will usually respond. I don't know what to do for a car.

*chuckles*

seriously, I think a lot of people have become rather immune to hearing a car alarm - we just shrug and wander off when it might really be a legitimate theft.

An alarm should only be used when there is a 'real thief' otherwise,

it is just like the old story of 'the boy who cried wolf' and nobody

ever listens anymore.

In our place, the alarm is still useful and not something that we are
already immune of. So, when people hear an alarm, everybody
rushes to it. It is different in your places.

maybe it's a cultural thing - perhaps in the US we've just become immune to loud noises and don't react as we should... a shift since everyone and their brother puts alarms on cars that aren't worth as much as the alarms are!
