| anyone got any ideas what the most effective sound is? A combo of sounds, or one long hooting one or... your thoughts? |

| Never thought of that. I think all of the aftermarket ones have standard sounds and patterns. |

Perhaps it depends on which alarm sounds can wake you up , meaning really wake you up and not just wake up to switch off the alarm and go back to sleep but really... wwwaaakkkee uuup.....
Others like the sound to be long and hooting while others just like it short coz they can wake up right away... it all depends... |

| that's what I'm thinking... if it's a variable sound, then someone's going to come look just to shut it down - if it's a repeating sound then is it as annoying.. |

A long hooting sound definitely work better. Especially during the night when everyone asleep and your car alarm goes off. It the alarm does not sound long enough that can annoys your neighbour, for me, it is not a good alarm sound.

| In U.S., the alarm of the car's security system is always set to shut off after a certain time, 30 seconds, I think. After that, you might get a ticket for disturbance. |
