I like cordless solder iron that uses coldheat:

"The patented Pro Soldering Tool is a cordless soldering iron designed for the serious hobbyist and professional. It has twice the power of the Classic tool."

either get a cordless one or one with a LOT of extra cord - like, ten feet and extentions!

there's nothing worse than struggling to reach something and looking back to see if you're pulling the plug out!

I have also found it to be incredibly helpful to make sure that you have pipe cleaners on hand. It is amazing how many little wires will pop out at you while you are soldering and you don't want to have to be brushing them away. Just twist the pipe cleaners (or something similar) around any loose wires that you don't want to get away from you. It's amazing!

Pipe cleaners are a pretty good suggestion. Wire ties would also work great!
